Beauty Is

She just wants to be beautiful… She craves attention, she praises an image. She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor…she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away, cause Covergirls don’t cry after their face is made… She don’t see her perfect, she don’t understand she’s worth it, or that beauty goes deeper than the surface… You should know your beautiful just the way you are. And you don’t have to change a thing the world could change its heart, no scars to your beautiful…

Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara – Album: Know It All

Why is it that when you do an image search for “Beauty” on Google, there are only pictures of white or fair-skinned girls, all in full-face contour? Is this the only standard-of-beauty?

What is your definition of beauty?

Is it the length of your hair?
Is beauty having no blemishes, bumps or scars?
Is it having hazel, almond-shaped eyes?
Are dark eyes beautiful?
Is being beautiful having dark skin?
Are only the fair beautiful?
Is it the name on the label inside your shirt?
Can beauty be in a thrift or Goodwill?
Is beauty foundation, concealer, blush and contour?
Is it beautiful when a girl wears no make-up?
Is it having a gap in your front teeth?
Are Porcelain Veneers beauty?
Is it a tips and acrylic?
Are natural nails beautiful?
Is beauty having straight or curly hair?
Is beauty a face without wrinkles?
Can you age and be considered beautiful?
Is it self-tanner?
Is beauty petite or plus size?
Is it having small feet?
Is being beautiful tall or short?
Is it an hourglass figure?
Can you be beautiful without ass implants?
Is it beautiful to have stretch marks after a nine-month pregnancy?
Is beauty how big your cup size is?

The Standard of Beauty

I have heard people call Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Halle Berry ugly. Those who fit in the standard can still be considered unattractive, right? Yes, because beauty is subjective. So what’s the standard, right?

Fair or Light skinned.
Thin but curvaceous.
Light eyes.
Long hair.
Big boobs.
Plump or big butt.

The standard is impossible to live up to without surgery, and yet, you still judge yourself and others based on their appearance— something uncontrollable. I witness body shaming and cyber bullying through Memes everyday. I see people kill their worth for beauty. Surgery after surgery, Botox, boob and butt implants, bleaching skin, eating disorders, tanning…. none of this is healthy!

So many of the rich and famous portray images of themselves filtered, airbrushed, wearing a full face of makeup every time we see them which can cause you to feel less than. The standard of beauty is too high; it’s a privilege that you may not be able to afford and even a full face of makeup doesn’t feel like enough.

I know from experience that wearing makeup daily will overtime cause you to dislike the way you look without it. I wore makeup daily when I was in high school and my freshman and sophomore year of college and it was so hard for me to go without wearing at least mascara because I felt insecure.

It’s okay to wear makeup, I do outside of #nomakeupmondays but if it’s a ritual, an addiction, you can’t leave your house without it, you can choose to re-evaluate your self-acceptance, a very essential part of self-love.

Beauty Is You

You were not created to fit in, you were created to stand out. You were created unique and beautiful as you are. Understanding how you see yourself is more important than fitting into an idea of who you should be. Trying to fit into the standard of beauty goes against humanity; being unique is what makes us human and what makes us all beautiful.

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, no matter the color of your skin, your skin type, the length or texture of your hair, the color of your eyes, or how short or tall you are, the scars, bumps, blemishes, dark spots, wrinkles and laugh lines do not define you, they are a part of you.

You deserve to accept all you are.

  1. LOVING this post!!! Thankfully, the idea of beauty is changing – although slowly. I read a study last year about the kardashian effect; basically, the idea of what is most beautiful changed recently and men “preferred” women with darker skin and eyes. And now we see more fuller and darker skinned models. As a girl with dark hair, I dyed my hair blonde when I was 10 not knowing I’d come out with orange hair! We need a mixture of all types, so all little girls don’t feel the need to change.

  2. I loved reading this post. It was so inspirational and more people need to define beauty the way that you do.

  3. I love this article. It’s great because it is about everyone’s individual beauty. Young, Old, Black, White, Indian, and everything in between. There are too many people out there (myself included) that don’t feel beautiful because we don’t look like some certain celebrity. But the best part is you don’t have to look like someone else to be beautiful. Flowers and Christmas lights look nothing alike and are both beautiful, just different. I saw that somewhere online and it made me really open my eyes! This is a great article, though.

    1. You speak truth. Say this to yourself over-and-over and you will find your beauty, because you are just that, beautiful!!!!! Thank you for reading Amy!!!

  4. A lovely page and such an interesting question. There isn’t really a definitive answer I believe. Have a lovely day from me in New Zealand.

    1. I am so glad you did. We put too much pressure on ourselves to be “beautiful” we are beautiful because we are alive…. thanks for taking the time to read! Please share with others!

  5. Beauty is having confidence in your own skin….. I just don’t know why a lot of ladies with dark skin follow the trend of bleaching or whitening nowadays. We should embrace our God given skin colour. I don’t regard attractive people with bad behaviours as beautiful. Thanks for sharing this post.

    1. Exactly. It is heartbreaking that this skin bleaching is on a all-time-high…. we need to all start valuing our natural beauty and others. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts!

    1. You speak truth. This was my entire purpose for creating this post…to challenge us to consider our biases and what we consider beautiful. Beauty is not contour! Thank you for taking the time to read Tonye!
